Day 6: Linderhof, Oberammergau & on to Munich
King Ludwig II, who reigned from 1864 to 1886, may have been Bavaria's most quirky king, but he is also its most beloved. He lived in a bit of a fantasy world, dressed up frequently as a medieval king, stayed up all night, and often imagined that he was dining with Louis XV and Marie Antoinette (who were long since deceased). He also built three magnificent castles, including Linderhof Palace. Linderhof was the king's personal retreat - built in splendid Rococo style, an homage to Versailles and the pre-French Revolution belief in the divine right of kings, for which he was nostalgic. Go inside for a private guided visit, enjoying a close-up look at his royal abode. Continue on to Munich, stopping for lunch in the village of Oberammergau, renowned for its Passion Play, performed here by the locals every ten years since 1634. Have dinner at your choice of restaurants in your landmark hotel in Munich.

Visit Nymphenburg Palace, a favorite home of generations of Bavarian royalty originally designed as their summer residence, and explore the carriage museum at the palace. Enjoy free time to do as you wish for the remainder of the day or join us for a poignant visit to Dachau Memorial Site; between 1933 and 1945, more than 206,000 prisoners from 30 countries were imprisoned at Dachau.

Depart Rothenburg, and then travel in style aboard old-timer Aagland cars - "horseless carriages." Pause for a picnic lunch, complete with sparkling wine, en route to Dresden (weather permitting). Stay in an 18th-century palace, rebuilt in all its splendor as a luxury hotel, in heart of the city's historic center.

Day 10: Baroque Art in the City of Dresden
Before World War II, Dresden was known as "The Jewel Box" for its magnificent art treasures and Baroque architecture. Heavily bombed during the war, much of the city's former glory has since been restored, including the Royal Palace, whose museum, dating back to the 1720s, displays some 4,000 works of art; Tauck's private tour through the New Green Vault takes in Renaissance and Classicist treasures, including jeweled gems of gold, silver, ivory and mother of pearl. Then explore more of Berlin as you wish tonight.

You'll be provided with a museum pass and audio guide to explore Museum Island's museums today, followed by a short cruise with an audio guide. Afterward, take time to explore Berlin as you like, perhaps sampling one of the locals' favorite foods, currywurst, a dish so tasty and emblematic of Berlin that there's a museum devoted to it. If you're curious to see a remaining section of the Berlin Wall, you might go to the East Side Gallery, a stretch of wall inventively painted by commissioned artists after reunification to commemorate that momentous occasion.
